Online Poker Tips
Developing your poker strategy will take some time, but here’s some poker tips to get you started. To improve, the best thing to do is play as much as possible. When you’ve played quite a few games, you’ll start to notice patterns e.g. similar hands showing up. Learning hand patterns and how good they are, is important for beginners as it’ll help you to make decisions during the casino game.
Other poker tips to help you to become better at poker and improve your experience are as follows:
Don’t bluff for the sake of it.
If asked about poker, most people will say that bluffing is an important part of poker. It’s not THE most important part though, and many players can successfully get through games without bluffing once. To beginners it may seem like less of a victory if you haven’t successfully bluffed your way through a game, but be aware that bluffs will only work in some situations. They’ll only work against certain people too, there’s no point in trying to bluff against the person who has a reputation of winning because it’s not likely to work in your favour! If you’re unsure whether you can get away with it, it’s best not to bluff at all rather than bluff just to say you can do it successfully.
Don’t play every single hand.
One of the most common mistakes that beginners make is playing a lot of hands. If you’re just starting to enjoy playing poker and want to get to know the game, a lot of people like to bet even when they have bad hands just to feel like they are part of what’s going on. Naturally, playing more doesn’t usually mean winning more, in fact, it normally means losing more. So if you want to stay on top of the game, only play about half your hands/the ones that have good starting cards.
Learn when to fold.
Just because you’ve put money in the pot, it doesn’t mean you should try and play to the end. Save yourself money if you have a bad hand by folding, instead of carrying on and losing more. You’re not going to become more likely to win if you put more money in! If it’s not likely that you’ll be able to create a good enough hand to challenge players with, it’s better to fold as early as you can.
Pay attention to what cards are on the table.
If you’re a beginner it may seem a bit overwhelming, the amount of things to keep track of. One of the most important things to keep an eye on is what cards are on the table as well as what is in your own hand. It’ll help you to realise hand possibilities and what other players are likely to have by the cards that they’ve discarded.
Pay attention to players in the game.
A good time to do this, is if you’re not playing during a hand. It’ll help you to notice whether players have a poker tell (they do a specific action when they bluff), and provide valuable information on how you should play against them. When you’ve pinned down what people do and when, you can work out when the best opportunity to try and win the pot is.
Don’t play for high stakes.
The amount of money in games that have high stakes can seem tempting to beginners but it’s not worth it if you don’t have the experience yet. Just because you’ve won big on a game that has lower stakes, doesn’t mean you’re ready to jump into a higher stake game. If you’re winning money on games with a lower payout, stick with it. Your potential win for the night will likely be larger than if you play a few high stake games and happen to lose one.
Play against people at your skill level or less.
This may seem like common sense, but a lot of beginners like trying their luck against players which are better than them. If you want to maximise your chance of winning, it’s best to play against other new players.
